We Need to Talk: How to Return to Your First Love

Scripture:

“Nevertheless I have somewhat against thee, because thou hast left thy first love.” - Revelation 2:4 (KJV)

You can be doing all the right things and still be drifting away from God.

You can show up, serve, worship, pray, and keep going through the motions while something in your heart begins to change. What once stirred your spirit may start to feel routine. What once came from love may become another responsibility on your list.

In Revelation 2, Jesus speaks to the church in Ephesus. He recognizes their work, patience, endurance, and discernment. They were doing many things right. But He also confronts them about something they had lost: their first love.

Their activity was still visible, but their intimacy with Him was no longer what it had been.

Sometimes we need to stop and ask ourselves an honest question: Am I still doing things for God while losing my closeness with God?

1. Don't Confuse Spiritual Activity With Spiritual Intimacy

The church in Ephesus was not inactive. Jesus acknowledged their labor, patience, and commitment to truth. Yet, in the middle of their faithfulness, He identified a problem in their hearts.

This reminds us that being busy in the things of God is not the same as being close to God.

You can know what to do in church and still need to reconnect with the One you serve.

You can maintain your responsibilities while neglecting your personal devotion. You can look spiritually strong to others while privately feeling distant.

God is not simply looking for your hands to stay busy. He desires your heart.

The answer is not necessarily to do more. Sometimes the answer is to return to the relationship that gave your service meaning in the first place.

Don't allow your routine to replace your relationship. Don't let your responsibilities become more important than your time with God.

You can keep the work going while your fire is fading. God is calling you back to the heart of it all.

2. Remember, Repent, and Return

In Revelation 2:5, Jesus gives the church a clear direction: remember where they had fallen from, repent, and return to the things they did at first.

First, remember. Think about the place where your love for God was alive, your hunger for His Word was real, and your desire to spend time in His presence was genuine. Remembering helps you recognize what has changed.

Second, repent. Repentance is more than feeling bad about being distant. It means changing direction. It means being honest about what has taken priority and making a deliberate decision to turn back toward God.

Third, return. Don't wait until you feel everything you once felt. Start praying again. Open your Bible. Worship even when your emotions are quiet. Make room for God's presence in your everyday life.

Second Timothy 1:6 reminds us to fan into flame the gift of God. A fire that has grown dim needs attention. In the same way, your spiritual life requires intentional care. Stop waiting to feel passionate before you practice devotion. Sometimes passion follows the practice.

You may have experienced disappointment, grief, frustration, or seasons that weakened your desire to keep going. But what happened to you does not have to determine where you remain. God is calling you to bring your heart back to Him.

His correction is not an invitation to hide in shame. It is an opportunity to respond, realign, and renew your devotion.

You don't have to remain where your fire grew dim. You can return.

Pause + Reflect

  • Have I become more focused on doing things for God than spending time with God?

  • What is one change I need to make this week to return to my first love?

Prayer: Lord, search my heart and show me where I have drifted. Forgive me for allowing routines, distractions, disappointments, or responsibilities to take the place of my devotion to You. Help me remember, repent, and return. Teach me to seek Your presence sincerely and fan the flame of my faith again. Restore my hunger for Your Word, my desire to worship, and my love for You. I don't want to simply look faithful. I want my heart to remain close to You. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Action Step (Do This Today)

Set aside intentional time with God today without distractions.

Read Revelation 2:1–7. Ask God to show you where your devotion has become routine or where other things have taken priority. Then take one practical step toward Him: pray honestly, spend time in His Word, worship, or remove a distraction that has been pulling your attention away.

Don't wait for a perfect moment or a powerful feeling to begin again.

Remember. Repent. Return. Fan the flame.

God is not calling you to perform more while your heart grows distant. He is calling you back to a love that shapes how you live.
