The Room Was Recovery, Not Residency

There are seasons where God allows us to recover behind closed doors.

Seasons where healing happens quietly. Where strength is rebuilt privately. Where we wrestle with disappointment, fear, exhaustion, heartbreak, and confusion.

But eventually, God begins asking a difficult question:

Are you recovering? Or have you become comfortable hiding?

Scripture

“Then the same day in the evening, being the first day of the week, when the doors were shut where the disciples were assembled for fear. Jesus came and stood in the midst, and said unto them, Peace be unto you.” - John 20:19

Devotional

After the resurrection, the disciples locked themselves inside a room.

Jesus had risen. The promise had been fulfilled. The victory already belonged to them.

But fear still kept them hiding. And if we’re honest, many of us know exactly what that feels like.

Sometimes life wounds us deeply enough that isolation begins to feel safer than purpose.

We survive heartbreak. We survive betrayal. We survive disappointment. We survive spiritual exhaustion.

And somewhere along the way, survival quietly turns into retreat.

The room becomes familiar. The comfort zone becomes normal. The pain becomes predictable.

But the room was never meant to become your permanent address.

Jesus entered the room not to leave the disciples there, but to send them forward.

That’s what God still does. He heals us so we can move again. He restores us so we can live again. He rebuilds us so we can carry purpose again.

Recovery is necessary. But residency was never the goal.

Some people have been sitting in emotional rooms for years. Rooms filled with fear. Rooms filled with insecurity. Rooms filled with shame. Rooms filled with disappointment.

But resurrection power does not stop at survival. It calls you back into purpose.

You are not called to spend your life hiding from what God already brought you through.

You are called to walk forward with healing, boldness, wisdom, and authority.

And maybe the hardest part of healing is accepting that eventually God will ask you to leave the room.

Not because He abandoned you. But because He restored you.

Pause + Reflect

  • Have I become too comfortable hiding in places God only intended for recovery?

  • What fear is trying to keep me from moving forward?

  • What would bold obedience look like in this season?

Action Step (Do This Today)

Spend time praying honestly about the areas where fear, disappointment, or insecurity have kept you spiritually stuck. Ask God for the courage to move forward again, even if it’s one small step at a time.
