How to Remain Devoted When You’re Waiting

Scripture:

“And she vowed a vow, and said, O LORD of hosts, if thou wilt indeed look on the affliction of thine handmaid, and remember me…” - 1 Samuel 1:11 (KJV)

Waiting can test your faith in ways you never expected.

You prayed. You believed. You trusted God. But the answer still hasn't come.

And when the waiting gets long, it can become easy to wonder if God has forgotten you.

Hannah understood that kind of waiting.

But her story teaches us something powerful: waiting does not have to weaken your devotion. It can deepen it.

Keep Showing Up While You Wait

Hannah was deeply distressed, but she continued going to the house of the Lord.

Her circumstances had not changed, but her devotion did not disappear.

That's important because sometimes we allow unanswered prayers to determine how close we stay to God.

When the answer doesn't come, we stop praying.

When disappointment grows, we stop worshiping.

When we don't understand God's timing, we pull away.

But Hannah shows us another way.

You can be disappointed and still be devoted.

You can have questions and still pray.

You can be tired of waiting and still show up.

Faith isn't always about knowing what God is going to do.

Sometimes faith is simply continuing to seek Him when you don't know when He will do it.

Don't Let Waiting Become Your Identity

Hannah's waiting season was painful, but it wasn't her identity.

She was not defined by what she didn't have.

She was not defined by Peninnah's words.

She was not defined by years of disappointment.

And neither are you.

Your current season does not get to tell you who God is or who you are.

You may be waiting for healing, restoration, provision, direction, reconciliation, or a breakthrough.

But while you're waiting, God can still work in you.

Sometimes the first thing God changes is not the situation around you.

It's the way you carry it.

Hannah entered God's presence brokenhearted, but she left with a different posture.

She had poured out her heart before the Lord.

She had surrendered what she could not control.

The answer had not arrived, but something inside her had shifted.

Stay Devoted to God, Not Just the Answer

One of the greatest challenges of waiting is remembering that God Himself is the greatest gift.

It's possible to become so focused on what we're asking God to give us that we forget to remain close to the One we're asking.

Hannah eventually received Samuel, but she didn't hold the blessing tighter than she held onto God.

She dedicated Samuel back to the Lord.

That's devotion.

God is worthy of your worship before the answer, during the waiting, and after the breakthrough.

Don't let the promise become more important than the Promiser.

Keep seeking Him.

Keep trusting Him.

Keep showing up.

Your waiting season may be longer than you expected, but it does not have to be wasted.

Pause + Reflect

What are you currently waiting on God for?

Has your waiting caused you to draw closer to God or pull away from Him?

Are you more focused on receiving the answer or remaining connected to the One who holds the answer?

Ask God honestly:

“Lord, help me remain devoted to You while I wait.”

Action Step (Do This Today)

Take the thing you've been waiting on and intentionally surrender it to God again.

Write it down.

Then write underneath it:

“I trust God with the timing, the process, and the outcome.”

Spend a few minutes praying over it.

Don't ask only for the answer.

Ask God to strengthen your faith, renew your mind, and teach you what He wants you to learn in the waiting.

Then do one simple thing that demonstrates your devotion, pray, worship, read Scripture, or encourage someone else.

Keep showing up.
